How Good is Your A-dar?

Would you know he has autism?

If you are not familiar with autism, I don't think you would.

I think if you are a parent of a child with autism, you might.

Just look at the position of those hands.

Really that's the only thing that gives it away.

But to me, that is a real telltale sign.

What do you think?

I mean, besides the fact that you think he is the most adorable little boy on the planet.

:-)  I wouldn't necessarily guess autism, but as OTs, we can guess that there is some sensorimotor phenomenon occurring.  The spectrum is so huge, I'm not about to gauge autism on sight, but sensorimotor patterns that are unusual.  Yes, my vision is primed for that.

Nice Blog. I need to follow this one. A lot of it rings so many bells.

I would only notice a really cute kid.  Because as a mom of an autistic child, the rest just doesn't matter.

He is truly adorable!  Yes, I would have noticed the hands, but that's because I'm familiar with it.

Thanks, I think so too :)

It's just funny what we notice as parents or as occupational therapy practitioners ;)

The bird keeps her hands at a real high guard. It's the low tone. I'm always surprised when people tell me they can't tell about the bird. But, I do think that any of "us" can always tell with our A-dar!!

What do I see first?  Cutie!  Second, a clue that I recognize a mommy like me (and someone who can "get" me) must be nearby.

I have finely tuned A-dar...I can spot it from a mile away. I sometimes wonder if others would spot Katie, or just think she was some out of control kid...

Oh I know that feeling!  I, very often, think to myself please let them think he has autism instead of thinking he is just a brat.

I have excellent A-dar.  We gravitate towards each other, like vs. like.  Yes it leaps out at me, but really awesome eye contact though and a smile.  Me, and my 3 boys, blunted affect, rarely do you see teeth, and looking at the camera, maybe 1 in 100 shots (per person)
